Dr. Khaled O. Sebakhy

Assistant professor of Chemical Engineering

Dr. Khaled O. Sebakhy is a chemical engineer who served as a senior FWO postdoctoral research fellow at Ghent University in Belgium. He holds a PhD in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary, Canada, and brings over a decade of multidisciplinary research experience across Canada, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. His research interests lie at the intersection of polymer chemistry, soft matter, sustainable polymers, and bio-based functional coatings. He has worked extensively on RAFT polymerizations, enzyme-catalyzed polymer systems, hydrogel technologies, and heterogeneous catalysis for green and biomedical applications.

Biography

Dr. Khaled O. Sebakhy joined Bahrain Polytechnic University, Kingdom of Bahrain, in 2025 as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering. He earned his B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Alexandria University, Egypt, followed by a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Polymer Chemistry in 2013 at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN), University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. His MPhil thesis, “RAFT-Mediated Polymerization in Nanoreactors,” explored advanced controlled polymerization techniques within confined environments.

Dr. Sebakhy was awarded the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II Doctoral Fellowship to pursue his Ph.D. in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, under the supervision of Prof. Pedro Pereira-Almao. Following his Ph.D., in 2018, he was appointed as a senior lecturer and research scientist in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Groningen, Netherlands.
